Tooge is attempting to tackle early O'Keefe history. The following chart shows the results of looking at four early censuses (censi?) in Burlington, Des Moines County, Iowa. You can see how intriguing the puzzle becomes as names surface, sometimes change, and disappear. As you know, the reuse of given names and the names, especially for children, given to the census taker adds to the complexity of the puzzle. Also, the age given can vary, whether by vanity or weak memory.* However, every bit of information adds to the picture and leads further into the puzzle.

The 1850 federal census may help, since Henry's father and mother (Esther? Mary?) immigrated from Ireland in 1847 (as listed in the 1856 census). This approach also helps to form new questions: When and how did Henry's father's first wife die. Who was Mary, his second wife? Tooge is sending this information to St. Paul's Catholic Church archivist who may be able to find some early church records. Of course, there is the hope that this journey will lead back to Ireland. Then, we will celebrate.

* There are age discrepancies between census years. Note Mother Mary ages only five years between each census period of ten years. The age given in the current census is in regular type, e.g. "40." If there are discrepancies, dittoes are placed under the first name listed for that person and the extrapolated ages are in brackets, e.g. "(44)." In subsequent census years, "----" means the person is no longer in the household. Since the O'Keefe's were Catholics, divorce was not possible. Thus, for older adults, absence meant they had died. For younger family members, "-----" means probably they had left home.
